November 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

 October passed by so quickly! Thank you so much for your ongoing support. We have had another successful month! As we begin the month of November, here are few updates in our class.

Curriculum Corner:

 Math
In Math, we’ve finished up our unit on Number Sense and we will soon be beginning our Patterning unit. Please refer to the attached math newsletter.


 Science

We continue to learn how to describe different structures and what makes a stable and strong structure through experiments and readings.
We will start our unit about the forces we come across on a daily basis (muscular, magnetic, natural, etc.) and their effects, as well as how forces cause movement and changes in movement.

 Language

In Literacy, we will be finishing sentences writing and beginning our unit on paragraph writing, focusing on organization, structure and purpose for writing. We will be working hard to apply everything we have learned about parts of speech and good sentences into our paragraphs. In reading, we are getting into our guided reading groups and will be bringing guided reading books home to practice. We are focused on making connections and well supported predictions by using evidence from the text and our prior knowledge.

 Health

In Health, we continue to learn about different emotions and strategies to deal with situations and relationships that involve these emotions.

 Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, we continue to make arts with different lines and patterns using a variety of materials, using various elements and principles of arts.

October 2016 Newsletter

Dear Parents and/or Guardians,

 It is difficult to believe that it is already October! I am truly enjoying learning with your child everyday. As mentioned in the Curriculum Night Newsletter that your child brought home, a newsletter will be posted on the blog or sent home every month to update you on what we are learning and any other important information. Be sure to check the blog regularly & sign up for remind if you haven’t yet!

Curriculum Corner: 

- Math: We are continuing to work on our Number Sense and Numeration unit. Please refer to the math newsletter sent home during the month of September for more information. Our next unit of math will be Patterning. A newsletter will be sent home when we begin this unit.

- Science: We are continuing to learn about Stable and Solid structures. We are learning to describe what makes a structure solid and stable when discussing structures in our environment.

- Language: We are learning how to write complex sentences. We are learning to use verbs, adjectives and conjunctions to help us add more detail to our sentences and make them more interesting.

Bonjour!

Our current focus in math has been on numbers (as part of our number sense unit). We have been concentrating on representing, ordering and counting numbers using different tools and manipulatives. Your child will build on their knowledge from previous years and he/she will be working with numbers from 0 to 1000. Your child will be counting forwards to 1000 by 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 100 and backwards from 100 by 1, 2, 5 and 10.  They will also be estimating, rounding, representing and decomposing numbers according to their place value (i.e., 423 = 4 hundreds 2 tens and 3 ones).  They will have many opportunities to use their knowledge in a variety of ways, and we will use appropriate math vocabulary to describe what we discover.   

During this unit we will be learning the following overall expectation:

·         read, represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 1000

·         demonstrate an understanding of magnitude by counting forward and backwards by various numbers and from various starting points

Here is a list of important words that we will be using during our unit on number sense.  Please encourage your child to use these words when communicating his/her knowledge of numbers with you.

What activities could you do at home to support your child?

• Go on a search for numbers wherever you are.  You can look at houses, signs, cars, windows, etc.  Have your child represent various forms of these numbers (number, words, pictures, place value)
• Practice counting forwards and backwards by 1, 2, 5 and 10 on the 100s chart.  Discuss with your child patterns they notice on the chart (i.e., each row increases by 10 and each column increases by 1).
• Have your child fill in the blank number lines provided and then practice counting forwards and backwards by 2, 5 and 10.  Keep in mind that number lines do not always have to start at 1.  They could start from various points (ex. 20, 21, 22 …)

• While you’re making dinner ask your child to count the number of beans or how many forks are in the drawer.  They can practice by counting by jumps of 2, 5 of 10.  Ask them if there is a more efficient way of counting and why.
• Have your child order numbers or tell you which is bigger and which is smaller.
